SEND Support

(This page summarises the content of the SEND Information Report – see policy for full details)

Ermysted’s Grammar School aims to provide an inclusive, supportive environment where every pupil can thrive. The school supports a wide range of special educational needs, including learning difficulties such as dyslexia, communication and interaction needs such as autism, sensory and physical needs, and social, emotional and mental health needs.

Identifying needs and accessing support

Parents and carers are encouraged to get in touch as soon as they have concerns about their child’s learning or wellbeing. The school welcomes direct communication with the SENDCo, form tutor or pastoral lead.

When a concern is raised, the SENDCo gathers information from teachers, previous schools and any professionals already involved. This may lead to further assessment or the creation of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) with clear goals and regular reviews.

Monitoring progress

Teachers regularly monitor effort and attainment, and reports are sent home throughout the year. Form Tutors and Head of year oversee pastoral needs, and the SENDCo or Subject Leader will contact families directly to discuss progress, drawing on teacher feedback, school data and one‑to‑one conversations with pupils.

Classroom support and adaptations

Teachers receive the information and training they need to adapt lessons for individual pupils. Support may include:

  • Differentiated teaching
  • Additional resources
  • One‑to‑one or small‑group support
  • Peer support from trained older pupils

Support strategies are reviewed regularly and adjusted using a plan‑do‑review approach.

Inclusion in the wider life of the school

All pupils are encouraged to take part in the school’s wide range of clubs, sports, trips and activities. When needed, support is put in place to ensure full participation. Trips follow the North Yorkshire EVOLVE risk assessment process.

Pastoral care and wellbeing

Wellbeing is central to the school’s ethos. Every pupil has a Form Tutor and Head of Year, and attendance is monitored closely. A school counsellor is available by appointment, and wellbeing is supported through daily form time, PSHCE lessons and careers guidance.

Working with specialist services

The school works closely with a range of external professionals, including:

  • CAMHS
  • Educational Psychologists
  • School nurses
  • Speech and language therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • The Sensory Support Team

These partnerships help ensure pupils receive the right expertise at the right time.

Pupil and parent Involvement

Parents are invited to Parents’ Evenings, Information Evenings and Consultation Days, and communication is shared through ParentPay, the school’s online platform and newsletters. Pupils contribute to school life through clubs, mentoring, discussion groups and the School Council.

Transitions and next steps

Transition into Year 7 includes primary school visits, an Open Evening and an Induction Day. Sixth Form applicants attend taster days. Throughout their time at Ermysted’s, pupils receive support to prepare for adulthood, including PSHE, Life Skills and careers guidance.

Contacting the School

Parents and carers can contact the school via their child, by letter, telephone or email.
